Memorable Quote: Claire- “Life is the messy bits”
Biblical Connection: John 16:21 Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world.
Claire left a letter for Juliet in her courtyard when she was 15 years old. 50 years later a journalist named Sophie finds the letter and decides to respond. What results is a quest to find Claire’s first love. She was supposed to meet him to runaway together but she was too afraid. As Claire, Sophie and Charlie Claire’s grandson travel, around the Italian countryside trying to find him, they meet several different men all with the same name, but very different lifestyles. At the time this quote is spoken they are pulling up to a huge mansion on a vast estate. In Charlie’s opinion if this turns out to be him, Claire has lucked out because she would finally have the love of her life, who is wealthy now, and she didin’t have to deal with all the hard work it took to get there. Claire disagrees, with the words of today’s quote.
Life is hard. Even people who seem to have it all, didn’t just get it ease. We spend our lives working and struggling and never quite get to the point where we are happy with the way things are. But if you think about it for a minute, do we really want an easy life? Or are we more like Claire, understanding that life is the messy bits? Life, and the difficulties, struggles and work that comes along with it, are what make life,….. life.
John 16:21 is a good metaphor for this. While in labor a woman experiences pain. She struggles physically for hours, sometimes days to bring a child into the world. It is most definitely hard work, and quite a bit messy. Yet after, the hard work is forgotten once she sees the result of all that work. No matter how hard, it was all worth it.
Our lives are the same. From the day we are born until we leave this earth we will have constant work, struggle and upheaval. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. But good or bad it is what life is all about and we should embrace it and look forward to the blessing of living a full, abundant and rewarding life.
Don’t shy away from the struggles of life.
Get messy and live.
Do you ever feel discouraged that life is at times messy?
Does it help or hinder your thinking to remember that going through the messy is what makes life worth living?
Using your Bible, read through looking for stories of difficult times, make note of the outcomes. Refer to them when feeling discouraged about the messiness of life.
