Biblical Connection:    James 1:2 “Count it all joy, my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (ESV)

While the men were away, the women got to play.  During World War II, women were recruited to play baseball in an effort to give people some form of entertainment while their husbands and sons were fighting in Europe.  Being a woman in a man’s role isn’t easy today and it wasn’t easy back then.  They left behind family responsibilities, dealt with criticism from the public and endured physical injury all for the sake of a game.  At the point at which our quote is spoken, Dottie’s husband has returned from the war having sustained an injury.  Her strained relationship with her sister has gotten worse as Dottie’s own natural athletic abilities have made her a star player.  Dottie has realized that while she loves playing baseball, it is just too difficult to “have it all.”  She decides it is best if she leaves baseball behind and returns to her responsibilities as a wife and homemaker. Her coach Jimmy Dugan,in a last ditch effort to convince her she should stay, delivers the line that makes all the difference.

Have you ever wanted to quit? Did a situation you were in make you just feel like giving up?  Ever wonder if all the trouble is worth it?  When we are tested, tried, and just plain pushed to our limits, it can be difficult to endure, let alone find “joy” in the situation as our verse says. However, God doesn’t allow difficult situations in our life to knock us down.  The goal of difficulty is always to grow our faith and make us stronger.  As the scripture says, yes, we will face tough times, yes we will go through things that are hard.  No, it won’t be joyful at the time. But only through the testing or our faith will it ever increase.  And increased faith is quite simply……..great.
