Movie Quote Monday

Today’s Feature: Field of Dreams

Memorable Quote: “ I'm 36 years old, I love my family, I love baseball and I'm about to become a farmer. But until I heard the voice, I'd never done a crazy thing in my whole life.”

Biblical Connection: 1 Chronicles 28:10 Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be courageous and act.

Ray Kinsella, an Iowa corn farmer hears a voice one day. He interprets the message of the voice as a command to build a baseball field in the middle of his valuable corn field. His friends and family thought he was a fool, or had lost his mind. After all, farm land in Iowa is valuable. A farmer can’t make a living if he doesn’t have land for his crops. And how do you support a family if you are not making a living? After building the field the voice continues to give him commands to continue to do things he feels are crazy. Throughout the movie Ray tries to understand and figure out the reasons behind all of these commands from the “voice”. It isn’t until the end of the movie do we see the reason for all of these crazy things he has done. Ray is given a second chance to play catch with his father who has been dead for several years. He also inadvertently has given his father a long awaited chance to play professional baseball. Our quote for today comes from the very beginning of the film and it speaks volumes of Ray Kinsella’s life and ours as well as followers of Jesus Christ.

Have you ever felt God ask you to do something you thought was crazy? Does being a follower of Christ cause you to sometimes look foolish in other people’s eyes because of your obedience to him? Do you ever feel like Ray Kinsella, building a baseball field in the middle of farm land without a clue as to what will happen next? Then, don’t worry you’re on the right track. God doesn’t always explain why He asks us to do things. He doesn’t give us a clear picture of what will happen next after we obey. He only asks that we obey and be willing to do whatever He asks, even if it means looking crazy. That can make obedience difficult. But remember what happened to Ray at the end of the movie? As crazy as it sounds, not only did he not lose his home to foreclosure, but he got a second chance to make things right with his father. He received gifts he could never have imagined. And he received them for his obedience.

And the blessings you will receive for your crazy obedience will be just as wonderful.

Additional Scripture:

John 15:16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.

Ephesians 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Deuteronomy 7:6 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth

Application Steps:

Make a list of things that you feel God has asked you to do that you have not done out of feel of looking foolish. Spend time in prayer over the list asking God to give you courage to act on these things.

Today, take a step out in faith and be obedient to the Lord, no matter how small.

Journal about your experiences being obedient with God to help you with future obedience.

I hope you enjoyed today's Movie Quote Monday.  I welcome your feedback and comments.
