Movie Quote Monday

Today’s Feature: Jerry Maguire, TriStar Pictures 1996

Memorable Quote: “You complete me”

Biblical Connection: Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

Jerry Maguire is a ruthless, cutthroat, self absorbed, willing to do anything to get a client, sports agent who decides it’s time to make a change in how he lives and works. As he struggles to make changes in himself and his life, he fumbles his way into love with single mother Dorothy and her son. Jerry rushes blindly into marriage and family thinking it is . However, love doesn’t come easy for Jerry and old habits die hard. It isn’t long before their marriage begins to show signs of trouble. As Jerry travels to a game with his client, Dorothy tells him he shouldn’t come back. It’s at this game that Jerry finally realizes that the key to everything he wants in his life lies in how he feels about Dorothy. She is what is missing from his life. Without her he is incomplete.

Do you remember what it felt like before you knew Jesus? Do you remember feeling like you were wandering and searching, trying to find that one thing that would make your life “click”. There were times when you probably felt restless, unsure of where your life was going. And then it happened. You asked Jesus into your heart, and you felt it. You felt that change inside. As if everything finally fell into place. Perhaps you are still in that place of searching. Maybe you still have that deep need for something that you can’t quite explain. You’ve tried and tried, but you can’t seem to fill that need. Sometimes we think what we are looking for is more things, a husband, a good job, etc. No matter what we try to fill that emptiness with, what we really need is Jesus. Jesus is the missing piece to our life. He is what our heart searches for from the day we are born. That “one thing” we know will fulfill us. In the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had a close relationship with God. They had constant communion with Him. Then, sin entered the world and that connection was broken. Every one of us who were born after Adam is born with a longing, an inner emptiness that we search everywhere to fill. Our heart naturally desires to return to the relationship we were meant to have with God. He is the only thing that will truly make us feel complete, full, satisfied, and happy.

Just like Jerry Maguire knew that without Dorothy he was incomplete; without Jesus, we are incomplete.

Application Steps:

Do you know Jesus? If not, click here to find out you can finally fill that emptiness inside.
Are you still trying to feel complete with other things instead of Jesus?  Take time today to pray and ask God to remove these hinderances and allow you to be filled with Jesus.
