Thinking on Thursday

There's something on my mind today.
I'm planning on trying to do something.  Almost immediately after deciding to do this thing, I was hit with doubts.  I began doubting whether or not I could accomplish what I want to.  I am doubting whether or not it could be successful.  I'm wondering if it could be a waste of time.
So I'm thinking today alot about that doubt.  It's not a very big word, but it has big implications.  Doubt can you from the top of the mountain all the way back down to the bottom.  When that happens you can only look up at the top and wonder how you'll ever get back up there.
Oh but look what I found out about this word. defines doubt like this: 1. to be uncertain about; consider questionable or unlikely; hesitate to believe. 2. to distrust. 3. to fear; be apprehensive about.
And there it is.
At the root of doubt is fear.  When we are in the midst of doubt it can sometimes feel like it is some other influence that is making us feel that way.  We can easily shift the blame of the doubt to something else.  But the truth is, the real culprit is ourselves.  We hold back, hesitate, question.  We are the one who is doubting. No one else is causing it.  No one else has done or said anything that has made us feel this way.  It is our own inside self that is speaking doubt to us.

Whenever we are attempting to do something that will stretch us those doubts will always want to rise up and knock us down.  And if we let it, then we will never reach our full potential.  We will never get to live out the plans that God has for us.  We are not meant to live in fear, we are meant to live abundantly.  There is no room for doubt or fear in abundance.

So what to do?

Well, the first thing is to recognize those doubts and fears for what they are.  If we allow ourselves to accept it as truth, then we will stay put.  We can't go up the mountain if we are afraid.
Next, pray.  Immediately if need be.  The sooner you turn it over to God, the sooner you can be free from it and move on.
Then, pray some more.  Everytime doubt or fear creeps up, and it will again and again, turn it over to God.  Don't let it stay in your mind for even a minute.
And then search.  Get your bible out and search it for any and all verses dealing with fear or doubt.  Read them over and over, write them on index cards (my favorite thing to do), hang them on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, on the dashboard of your car, anywhere that you will see it.  Read it as often as you need to to keep the doubt and fear away.
The only way to fight fear and doubt is to arm youself with the truth.  Anything that you feel that goes against what God's word says, has no business in your life.

Once you do all of this, go forward.
Do whatever it is you were doubting you could.
Plow ahead bravely.
It won't be easy, but it will be worth it.

That's what I'm thinking about today, how about you?
