“This is not about going back. This is about life being ahead of you and you run at it. Because you never know how far you can run unless you run.” Penny Chenery from the movie Secretariat
Secretariat or “Big Red” as he was referred to by his owner, handler, and trainer was a horse like no other. He did something that no other horse had been able to do for 25 years. He not only won the Triple Crown but he won it and broke records in the process. Each of the three races he won he finished faster than any other horse had. The final race he not only finished with a speed record but with the longest lead ever. 31 lengths. That would be a lead that is the length of 31 horses between him and the 2nd place horse.
Whether you see it in the recent movie or you see the actual footage on YouTube it is truly impressive. To this day, he is still considered the greatest race horse that ever raced.
And all he did was do what he was born to do.
The gate opened and he ran.
Each of us has been born with our own purpose as well.
It is similar to a race laid out before us. It is our job to run it, run it well, and finish in such a way that is pleasing. Hebrews 12:1 says Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us
This passage comes right after what is often referred to as the Hall of Fame chapter. Hebrews 11. In that chapter the writer of the book of Hebrews goes through a long list of people from the Bible who through faith, accomplished great things. Chapter 12, verse 1 begins with therefore which connects the two chapters together. Basically, because we are surrounded by those who through faith accomplished all that they were supposed to, we should be able to go forward with whatever lies ahead as well.
Because they ran their race, we can run ours.
As our quote states, you never know how far you can run till you run. That Hall of Fame list includes people who accomplished extraordinary things simply by doing what they were meant to do. They followed the path God laid out for them. They didn’t give up when things got tough. They didn’t allow anything to get in the way.
Now it’s our turn.
God has marked out the track. He supplies the strength we need to persevere. The Bible gives us the examples to follow.
Don’t let anything hold you back.
The trumpet has sounded.
The gate is open.
It’s time to run people.
