Movie Quote Monday

“You know how we are always saying what a pain you are, you’re the world’s worst dog….don’t believe it, don’t believe it for a minute, because you know we couldn’t find a better dog, I love you more than anything, you’re a great dog. I love you” John Grogan from the movie Marley & Me

The movie Marley & Me is about the life of John Grogan and his family as they struggle to handle their dog that is not your typical family dog.

Marley is what you would call an absolute nightmare of a dog.

He eats constantly.

He drags anyone who tries to walk him.

He chews everything. I mean everything. Furniture, socks, toys, jewelry, walls….anything and everything Marley could get into his mouth, went there.

He was also afraid of thunderstorms. Whenever one would come up, Marley would go nuts. He would tear around the house breaking things, barking and trying to scratch his way out to get away from the storm.

Thinking that training might help, the Grogans enroll Marley in an obedience class.

He was kicked out.

Some people would have given up and possibly found Marley a new home when they couldn’t get a handle on him. But you know what? The Grogan’s had that dog for 13 years. It seemed no matter how bad Marley was as a dog, they loved him and wouldn’t give up on him. Marley was part of their family. There was a bond between John and Marley that lasted long after Marley was gone.

Our relationship with God is very similar. Think back to before you knew Him. Take a minute to remember what your life was like then. For me I rarely like to remember that time. Someone looking on from the outside would have said the same thing about me as I said about Marley “absolute nightmare”. I lived completely outside the realm of any kind of discipline and I had no desire to live any other way. I would imagine that God wasn’t too happy with me then. And quite honestly, there are times even now, that I am sure God isn’t too happy with me. Having a relationship with Him doesn’t make us immune to making mistakes. If anything it makes them more obvious to us.

However. And don’t you just love that there is a “however”?

This is what God’s own word says about His love for us.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It also says this.

Lamentations 3:22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed for his compassions never fail.

And this.

Psalm 25:7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember, for you Lord are good.

And still this.

Psalm 136:2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.

The Bible is full of references to God's love for us. No matter what we have done. Nothing can change how God feels about us. His love is unconditional. He would never withhold His love because of something we have done. His love is forever. From beginning to end He loves us. Through the messes and mistakes. God’s love is truly an incredible gift. One we should never take for granted.

Whatever mess the Grogan’s would come home to find Marley had made, it didn’t matter. That dog would rush up to John happy to see him. And even though Marley would practically knock John down after countless times of trying to train him not to jump…….

John would hug that dog.

Because He loved him.

Mess and all.
