“Don’t you just love New Years? You get to start all over. Everybody gets a second chance.”-from the movie Forrest Gump
You may not even remember it this particular scene in the movie. It’s not the most important scene, but it definitely has a lot to say. I don’t even know who the actress is who plays the part of the women who speaks this line. She isn’t a well known name. I’m not even sure she has a name in the credits. Forrest and his friend Lieutenant Dan are celebrating New Year’s Eve with two girls who, how shall I say it?.... are out for a good time.
When you look at the girl’s face as she speaks, it’s clear she has had a rough night, probably even a rough life. Heavy black eyeliner on eyes that are hard and sad at the same time, skin that shows the effects of cigarettes and alcohol and a blank almost numb expression. But she looks at the tv sees the Time’s Square Ball dropping, she utters the above words.
If anyone wanted a second chance at life, it is clear she does.
Have you ever felt like that?
As if you’ve messed things up so badly you just need to start over?
You see the effects of the mistakes you’ve made with those around you and you think it’s too late.
You’ve hurt people or yourself badly.
Do you think it’s too late for you?
Well, if you are thinking like a regular person, then I can understand how you would feel it’s too late.
But you know something, God isn’t a regular person. He isn’t like people at all. God doesn’t treat us the way we think He would. He doesn’t even treat us the way people would. With God, we don’t get what we deserve, we get what we would never expect……a second chance.
Scripture says: Isaiah 44:22 “I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like a morning mist. Return to me for I have redeemed you.”
God is a God of second chances. The Bible is full of stories of people going away from God and then returning. Many people of the Bible who’s stories we still read today for inspiration, were once far from God. David “a man after God’s own heart, committed terrible sins in his lifetime and yet he is still considered an example for us to follow. Why? Because he didn’t stay far from God. He didn’t keep going his own way.
David returned to God and asked for a second chance.
And God gave it to him.
Deuteronomy 4:30 “When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey him”
Zechariah 1:3 “Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: Return to me declares the Lord Almighty, and I will return to you says the Lord Almighty.”
Over and over we stray from Him.
Over and over we repeat the same sins.
Over and over we reject Him.
Over and over He takes us back.
That’s the only way I can describe that kind of love and devotion.
No where on this earth, in this world, do you find that kind of faithfulness.
There is no one you will ever know in your lifetime who will forgive as often and as lovingly as God. He is the only one who has the capability of giving us the second chance we need. The second chance that matters most.
A chance to start fresh.
To begin again.
Have a clean slate.
Nehemiah 9:31 “But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them for you are a gracious and merciful God.”
Micah 7:18“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgressions of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy”
Now is as good a time as ever. No matter what situation you are in, what you have done, how bad you think you are, you can have a second chance. We don’t have to wish and hope on a falling ball to get it either. If you return to God and ask Him, He'll give you a second chance to. All we have to do is humble ourselves before Him and ask.
Put your hope in Him.
Now is the perfect time.
And see, it’s built right into the title…… New…..Year.
Happy New Year!!!!
